The Women & Child Development Department, Kerala functions to ensure the holistic physical, psychological, cognitive and emotional development of women and children, and to build a gender-sensitive family, community, programme and policy for the development and protection of women and children.
The department runs various initiatives and programmes for Child Development (ICDS), Child Protection (ICPS), Women Protection and Women Empowerment. The Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) is one of the world's largest and most unique schemes for early childhood development.
The objectives of the ICDS scheme are to improve the nutritional and health status of children aged 0–6 years, to lay the foundation for the proper psychological, physical and social development of the child, and to reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout. The department also works to coordinate policy and implementation across departments, promote child development and improve the health of newborns' parents. Improving mothers' health and creating awareness through proper nutrition and health education is essential to caring for a child's health and nutritional needs.
Creating awareness among people was not an easy task. The department wanted to reach all categories of people — regardless of age and gender — across Kerala. After a thorough analysis of these objectives, the Digitalbuddha team developed a strategy to raise awareness about the importance of Breastfeeding, the Prevention of Anemia, Precautions for Covid-19 and more.
We planned to create quiz campaigns for each objective regularly and target the audience in Kerala. Each campaign turned a public health message into an interactive quiz — with answers and explanations — so people could genuinely learn about each objective while they engaged.
Awareness campaigns often struggle to hold attention. A quiz flips that — people participate because they want to know how much they know, and walk away having learned about breastfeeding, anemia and Covid-19 without ever feeling lectured.
